The Norwegian method in cycling has put threshold training at the center of the conversation. The premise is attractive: accumulate massive volumes of work just below the second ventilatory threshold, often splitting the load into two sessions on the same day. Double threshold, strict control, podium results.

It is the model dominating the current elite field. It is also the reason a huge percentage of amateur cyclists are chronically fatigued and stuck at their current numbers.

Copying a professional's structure without their physiology, base volume, or daily measurement tools is a mathematical error. For a cyclist training 6 to 10 hours a week, replicating the Norwegian method without pricking a finger to measure lactate in every interval does not generate superior adaptations. It generates overuse.

The amateur cyclist's math problem

The success of double threshold depends on a non-negotiable factor: absorption capacity. That capacity is built through low-intensity volume.

A professional training 25 hours a week under a polarized model dedicates about 20 hours to easy riding (Zone 1 and Zone 2). That massive volume is the aerobic cushion that allows them to absorb 4 or 5 hours of threshold work a week without breaking their endocrine system.

If you train 8 hours a week and try to fit in three threshold sessions (or a double threshold day), your math breaks. You are dedicating 40% to 50% of your week to high intensity. You are no longer doing polarized training or the Norwegian method. You are following a constant high-intensity plan, which is the oldest recipe for overtraining.

The intensity limit: In a true 80/20 framework, an 8-hour-a-week cyclist only has the budget for 1.5 hours of accumulated high-intensity time per week. The rest must be pure aerobic base.

Why your power meter lies

In cycling, power rules. The power meter is an absolute tool: 250 watts is 250 watts today, tomorrow, and in December. The problem is your physiology is not absolute. It is relative to your rest, your stress, your nutrition, and the ambient heat.

The Norwegian method requires millimeter-precise physiological control. When a professional rides "sub-threshold" intervals, they measure lactate during the rest periods. If the target is to hold lactate at 3.0 mmol/L and the strip reads 3.8 mmol/L, the rider drops the watts immediately. The mechanical number (power) is subordinate to the physiological state (lactate).

You do not do that. You configure your session in TrainingPeaks based on an FTP (Functional Threshold Power) test you did six weeks ago. You head out to ride 4 × 10 minutes at 95% of that static FTP.

If you slept poorly, had a hard week at work, or if it is 10 degrees hotter than test day, that mechanical 95% represents a physiological 102% today. Without realizing it, you spent 40 minutes above your real threshold. You generated an exponential amount of fatigue, emptied your glycogen stores, and ruined your sessions for the next three days. You thought you did the Norwegian method; you actually did a disguised time trial.

The trap zones: why we use 7 zones instead of 5

To avoid this margin of error, at Triaperformance we use a seven-zone model (1, 2, X, 3, Y, 4, 5). We separate two specific bands because this is exactly where recreational cyclists bury their progress.

Zone X: The "Tempo" trap

Zone X is the upper half of traditional Zone 2. It is that peppy pace, often called low Tempo, where you feel pressure on the pedals but can hold a broken conversation.

We avoid it for a cost-benefit reason. Zone X accumulates considerably more fatigue than low Zone 2, but delivers the exact same aerobic stimulus. Many cyclists go out for an easy ride, get bored, push a bit harder, and end up spending three hours a week in Zone X. They arrive at interval day lacking the freshness needed to hit high watts. If the day says easy, it is low Zone 2. No excuses.

Zone Y: The fake threshold

Zone Y is the floor of Zone 4. It is the band surrounding exactly 100% of your estimated FTP.

We isolate it because threshold is not a static line painted on the ground; it is a mobile range. Training aimed exactly at 100% of an outdated FTP does not guarantee you are working what you think you are. Furthermore, the real adaptations you seek in high intensity require pushing the band above that limit.

If you are going to pay the very high neural and muscular cost of a hard session, do not stay in the middle. Pay the full price above Zone Y, or stay in Zone 2 building base. Zone Y generates the fatigue of hard work without ensuring the peak adaptation of full Zone 4.

How to train threshold with limited time

If you have between 6 and 10 hours a week, you do not need double threshold. You need to truly polarize and ensure the key session of the week is executed with precision. The primary metric on the bike is always power, followed by heart rate as a fatigue validator.

In a typical build block, we use two types of sessions to move the threshold from below and from above.

The extensive approach: Time in zone

The goal is not to hit peak watts, but to teach the body to sustain a high percentage of your capacity for longer. This is worked just below Zone Y.

The logical progression during a four-week block is to lengthen the time rather than raise the watts. You start with 3 × 10 minutes, move to 2 × 15, then 2 × 20, always at the same power. If you try to increase power every week, you will eventually cross the physiological threshold line and fail the session. When you manage to sustain 40 total minutes of work with a controlled rate of perceived exertion (RPE) and without severe cardiac drift, it is time to retest your FTP.

The intensive approach: Above threshold

This is the session that hurts. The goal is to work in real Zone 4 (102-105% of FTP) to pull your threshold up. These are shorter blocks, with recoveries that allow you to maintain the mechanical quality of the pedal stroke.

A classic session is 4 × 8 minutes or 5 × 5 minutes, depending on the cyclist's power profile. Discipline is key here: if the target is 280W, riding the first interval at 310W out of excess motivation means you will ride the last interval at 250W out of pure agony. That ruins the physiological purpose of the day.

When to re-evaluate your numbers

The biggest risk in this training is using old data. We recommend a field test every 2 or 3 months if consistency has been good. You do not need a lab, you need a repeatable protocol (a classic 20-minute test, or WKO5 iLevels if you use advanced software).

There are two clear signals to test early:

The counterargument: "But I did Sweet Spot and improved a lot"

This is the standard response. An amateur cyclist reads about the Norwegian method or buys a "Sweet Spot Base" plan on a generic app. They spend six weeks doing long intervals at 90-95% of FTP four times a week. And sure enough, their FTP goes up 15 watts in the next test.

We do not deny it works in the short term. Sustained intensity generates rapid adaptations. The problem is what happens in week 12.

That cyclist hits a glass ceiling. Because they did not develop their pure aerobic base (Zone 1 and 2), their capacity to recycle lactate plateaus. At the same time, because they ignored neuromuscular work and peak power by always riding at medium intensities, their power curve flattens. They become a diesel cyclist: very good at holding 22 mph (35 km/h) steadily, but unable to respond to an attack, get over a punchy climb, or sprint.

And worst of all: chronic fatigue accumulates. Eventually, the central nervous system says enough, watts drop, sleep worsens, and motivation disappears.

The Norwegian method is brilliant because it integrates the volume and control necessary to avoid that collapse. If you do not have the 25 hours or the lactate meter, the alternative is not guessing. The alternative is executing the basic work perfectly: truly easy rides to build the engine, and hard sessions measured with a scalpel, not a hammer.
