Structuring a plan for Valencia requires making two decisions before taking a single stride: choosing between a 12-week or 18-week block, and deciding whether to guide your workouts by pace or heart rate.

The demands of a 100% flat course

Valencia's flat elevation profile is sold as an advantage, and it is for the clock. But physiologically, it presents a challenge your training plan must address: the biomechanical load is identical for 42 kilometers (26.2 miles).

In a rolling marathon, gradient changes force you to subtly modify your muscle recruitment pattern. Uphills load the glutes and calves; downhills transfer the impact to the quadriceps. That variation provides micro-rests at the muscle fiber level.

In Valencia, you will repeat the exact same stride pattern roughly 40,000 times without interruption. There are no pace changes forced by the terrain. Pace is the supreme metric for Valencia. Because it is a flat circuit, the pace on your watch is an almost perfect reflection of your effort. Training by pace teaches you to internalize the exact cadence you need for your goal. The physiological and contextual reality is different. An elite athlete enters that 20-week cycle after a programmed rest period. They weigh their food, sleep 9 hours a night plus an afternoon nap, and receive physiotherapy twice a week. Their only stress is training.

For an amateur runner with a 40-hour work week, family, commitments, and daily stress, sustaining a high physical and mental demand block for 20 weeks almost always results in a premature fitness peak in October, followed by a plateau and a very high risk of injury in November.

Stress is cumulative, and your nervous system does not distinguish between the stress of 1000m intervals and the stress of a tight deadline at the office.
